Promise is a promise pt 2 of year 1 — spring semester! When did it start? January 31st. End? May 24th. Also this was the first semester we got to make our own schedules so yeah, I put a lot of thought into mine. It helps to hit two birds with one stone so courses that are writing intensive and fulfill something else too were heavy targets for me but with enrollment dates for freshmen being late, it was hard to get them. Regardless though, the schedule turned out alright. I felt that the course load also took a huge jump. 16 credits, 5 courses later, it’s over! So, without further ado, here are classes I took for the spring : )

Definitely one of the lighter classes this semester and I’d retake it in a heartbeat. Everyone who suggested this class to me were definitely right in saying it’s easy. The class requires you to complete 4 quizzes, 4 discussion boards (as a group), 1 midterm essay, 1 public anthropology project essay and 1 final. The positives don’t just end there, the course satisfies not one but two things: Flexible Core – Individual and Society and Pluralism & Diversity – Group A: Non-European Societies!!

😬 is an accurate emoji to describe this class LOL. In all honesty, I think CSCI 12700 was better than 135. Maybe that’s because of the course difficulty or the structure. In 127, majority of the course was python whereas in 135 it’s C++. Furthermore, the support pillars in the form of weekly quizzes and code reviews were absent. While the assignments had due dates on gradescope, we only got help if we wanted to through the form of recitation sessions. The issue is, and I’m not sure if its true for everyone but I’m more likely to focus when I’m inclined to go. However, the recitation leaders did provide videos from time to time and those proved to be a lifesaver when stuck on an assignment. We had a couple projects, a lot of assignments, midterm and a final. I will say though, the practice by taking previous exams was one of the best methods to do well in the course. The course is a must-take class if you are a CS major at hunter. All in all, the course was just 😬.

I love him. This course is a hidden gem, clearly the 5/5 on RMP wasn’t a fluke. From ending the class early because it got dark to fun experiments to story times, it felt like all he wanted was for us to learn and have fun. The course material was not too difficult either. If you like rocks, this is a big W for you. Each lab you’re given a pallet of rocks and you learn more about them, how they’re formed, texture, characteristics and more. The course does contain a lot of labs that you have to write up and maintain in a notebook which he keeps after the semester ends. The write ups usually include some of the exercises he assigns and mandatory introduction/conclusion pages. It was pretty fun to do and I’d love to take another course with him. It felt like he genuinely understood students you know? The course satisfies Required Core – Life & Physical Sciences.

So Hunter requires you to take foreign language. And I chose german. Okay but like the German department at Hunter is one of the best from the CUNYs and taking spanish would be better for me you know? So I’d rather take the hard way out 😎. To be honest though, the course was great. Don’t get me wrong, the course was a LOT of effort and work but if you put that effort in you do get to see the fruits of your labor. She has a nice method of teaching and sudden calls on you require you to think on your feet and actually know what you’re talking about. It was kind of jarring but at the same time, I get it. Language is also a thing that you must keep at it to learn which is ironic cause I haven’t touched german since I took the final which is not good LOL. Anyways, this class was solid albeit scary at times. The course satisfies Hunter Focus – 1st Level Language course.

Oh my lord. This course. First thing first, this course was HYBRID. Lectures and homework which was on lumen were all online. Tests were administered in person. Now I don’t know about you but learning anything online is tough but math? Especially calculus 2 online? No. I did not like this course at all, it’s mainly due to the fact that the course material is difficult as is and learning math online worsens it. The professor knew what he was talking about but I feel like I couldn’t absorb it well through a computer screen. The tests were another different breed with problems made up by him but sometimes, they had hints. The also sometimes detailed a way to go about the solution. He also provided extra credit but they’re not normal. Full of questions about anime, obscure literature books and old war references, I don’t know who would get them right. Most did not even bother attempting it as it was incredibly vague. After each test though, he did usually send a nice email regarding the test, some thoughts, encouragement and a picture of his dog which was very cute. I wish I took this course in person to be honest with you. The course had a lot of lumen homework, 3 exams where the lowest score is dropped and a final which counts as 2 exams. It took all of me to pass this course I won’t even lie. The course is a must-take class if you are a CS major at hunter.
So like, I do realize there was a month-ish gap between post pt1 and pt2 but you know, it is what it is. Summer is making me go insane so don’t blame me. Hopefully this becomes helpful at some point though, let me know if you end up taking any of these classes in the future. It feels nice to know you helped someone! When I had the idea of rating the semesters, I did envision someone like years down the road scouring for course suggestions at Hunter and then stumbling upon this LOL. But yeah, hopefully this was a fun read despite being too long. TTYL!
why are these posts so late
W year, many more to come
