Cricket is one of many sports that utilize a ball and a handheld instrument to play the game. The sport originated in the south-eastern counties of England and was popularized through the introduction of many other leagues which soon appeared like the IPL. Cricket was somewhat localized in its early days but the British Empire had been instrumental in spreading the game overseas and by the middle of the 19th century it had become well established in Australia, the Caribbean, India, New Zealand, North America, and South Africa. This eventually led Cricket to be international. The sport is indeed televised and leagues like the IPL and other smaller leagues revolutionized the sport. However, due to some mishaps, Cricket was never played on the Olympic stage but it is scheduled to do in the next Olympics in Tokyo (once this pandemic is over of course) Cricket is played with 13 players on the field at a time. In its simplicity is just two batsmen facing 6 balls (1 over) by the bowler with fielders surrounding the field to catch, cause a runout, or block pathways to the boundary. An over might last more than 6 balls with wides, no balls, etc and batsmen can be out in many ways such as a runout, bold out, caught out, etc. Similar to cricket, another well-known sport that utilizes a ball and a bat is tennis. In tennis, the objective of the game is to serve the ball in a way that the opponent is not able to return. The player who is unable to return the ball will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. This is dissimilar to cricket as no one gains a point in cricket and the makeup of the regular match is also vastly different. Cricket is a team-oriented sport with 13 players playing all the time and while tennis also has a team aspect, it is only 2 players against 2. Moreover, tennis has been an Olympic sport for a long-ago whereas cricket is not. Although fundamentally different, the two distinct sports still share key similarities and both are enjoyable to watch and entertaining to play. Hopefully, this at least persuaded you to try out or even watch the sport!
