With each successful change, society improves. If the numerous changes that occurred in the past – drastic or minimal – were not implemented, we would not have achieved the society we now know today. Sure, it is not perfect by any means but it is still better than what we had in the past. Logically, changes are put in place when an issue is prevalent and is plaguing society. It is basic human intuition to fix the issue immediately. Furthermore, if a problem is not encountered, what is there to change? Without negatives, we believe everything is perfect, a simulated utopia emerges.

Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced

James Baldwin

Problems, issues, complications, difficulties always emerge. Whether or not it is on a personal basis or a large-scale society-wide issue, steps to correct the mistake and make everything right again, have to be taken one way or another. This is evident in the early stages of our nation. We took pride in owning slaves at one point, we treated them like property, we harassed them, robbed them from enjoying their life, unlike others just because of something they cannot even control – the fact that they were black. It took hundreds of years but sure enough, we abolished slavery through the passage of the thirteenth amendment. This is a perfect example of how not letting up, not giving up on change ultimately pays off. A lot of people died, just pushing for what’s right, just to make sure the future generations do not get to experience the dreadful system of slavery. A common trend is evident in history, while people are always pushing for changes, it takes a serious devastating event, a tragic death, a horrible outcome in order to gain the attention the change movement should have received from the very beginning. I find this incredibly saddening.

Why do we have to face a consequence…just to see we are wrong all along?
