I’m officially a junior! Two years passed by so quick, two more left — or just one more (we’ll see). In the midst of quizzes, final exams and assignments, life gets hectic and it’s easy to forget how quick we progress. The semesters go by so quick (even when you are not having fun). Year 1 saw Kazi getting acquainted (great song), learning Hunter and navigating how to survive your first day, week, month and semester. Year 2? Same but different. New courses will always take some learning but somethings remain the same. Same place to study, same group of friends for the most part, similar habits. You become comfortable and know how a day would generally go. FAFSA becomes just another item on the todo list rather than a big thing, enrolling in classes turn from hectic to it is what it is when classes get full and professors are always a hit or miss. Either way, sophomore year was more of the same but immensely better when it comes to ease of life. With that being said, lots to cover so let’s start with:

Fall 2022

CSCI 15000 –
Discrete Structures
Saad Mneimneh4
Professor’s last name is hard to pronounce but the course is harder. Discrete mathematics is regarded as one of the hardest math courses for CS majors, especially at Hunter. The course moves fast and expects you to move faster. Professor Saad knows what he’s teaching but at times it’s hard to keep up. The key for this course is tutoring – a lifesaver. From the homework (which is also a big part as it tests you on the material) to exam preparations (through old exams), tutoring at the math department was crucial. Shoutout to Brandon Foster specifically for his relentless pursuit at making sure you understand a question and only then moving on. Tutoring was always worthwhile with him. Furthermore, there is a recitation section mandatory for this course which is basically tutoring as well. The course is super hard and for good reason. I won’t lie, it was fun at first with pigeonhole and inclusion-exclusion but when Euler, implications and more got introduced…Anyways, all the hard work did end up paying off and as far as recommendations, TrevTutor on youtube was a major help and if you want to see how some of the problems of discrete math are this github repository exists or need more help with the homework this playlist also exists. This is a must-take class if you are a CS major!

GERMN 10200 –
Elementary German II
David Koch3
After GERMN 10100 comes GERMN 102. Looking back, it was okay. Nothing too special or better than last semester to write home about. At the end of the day, it is yet another language class albeit harder in some ways. From memorizing vocab to making review sheets, the class does demand a lot but it’s nothing 101 student’s can’t handle. I do however prefer my 101 class as I loved the always ready to answer, participation is key aspect of the classroom the professor created. This class had flashes of GERMN 101 but material got harder, quizzes got difficult and exams needed more preparing. All of this was expected and nothing was out of the blue. The professor was nice, replied quickly and delivered the material semi-okay. A lot of learning is in the book where we learn more about Rudi, Ernst, Karl and their entire gang. This course satisfies Hunter Focus – 2nd Level Language course.

MUSHL 10100 –
A Thousand Years of Listening
David Johnson3
I love this class. From dissecting music to the essay prompts, this class was heaven. I had this class online-asynchronous so that definitely was a factor but even so, this class was so fun. The professor was passionate which is always a plus, the material was digestible, workload was not heavy at all and the essays were amazing. With no word limit, you’re allowed to express yourself to your heart’s content and the essays are based on YOU. Your experiences, opinions and more are taken into account and serves as a crucial part of the essay. His feedback was always wholesome and positive and considering this course satisfies CUNY Common Core – Creative Expression AND Pluralism & Diversity – Group D: European Societies, although difficult to get in, I can’t recommend this course enough.

REL 25400 –
Tribal Religions
Henry Kramer3
Sticking to the vein of one class checking multiple boxes at once, Tribal Religions was another amazing course. I learnt so much about nature, tribes and all sorts of rituals during the class and the workload, although required a lot of polishing and effort, was super manageable. From having friends to laugh with in class to enjoyable videos, the material was not hard at all. I loved this class as it allowed me to give my brain a rest from all the math from discrete and statistics. This is definitely one of the hidden gem courses Hunter has to offer and the professor did a phenomenal job of explaining the various concepts in class as well as tease new material through a weekly basis. What does this course satisfy? Well, the course fulfills Pluralism & Diversity – Group B: Groups in the U.S.A. while also being Writing Intensive — despite not being that intensive.

STAT 21300 –
Introduction to Applied Statistics
Fadime Demiralp3
Statistics. Everyone knows what it is and how tedious the calculations are. One wrong digit or wrong formula and your entire process is wrong. Thankfully, there’s partial credit and a cheat sheet to ease things. Being completely honest, the class was okay which is a good thing considering how not fun the material was. Learning about numbers and data that early in the morning was not enjoyable, at least for me. However, the learning was facilitated through webassign, the homework assigner of choice. From getting different variations of the same question to having a bulk load of practice, doing the homework once when it’s assigned and again before the exam was a valid strategy. The professor was okay and reasonable but if any information was seen on the cheat sheet that should not have been there, your entire cheat sheet was deemed void. Furthermore, our professor graded our exams lightning fast and shared the median and average scores of the class — because it’s a statistics class after all. This math course is a must-take class if you are a CS major.

With all that said and done, fall 2022 was amazing. From thursdays to lulu to KMS to nins, I had a lot of highs with not so many lows. Declared a math minor, juggled 3 jobs at once, GPA improved, got closer to people I wanted to get closer to, rolled the dice and got great teachers. Almost no regrets about this semester. Now, spring 2023? That’s a story for another day. Hopefully this wasn’t too long of a read and is helpful to whoever is ratemyprofessor-ing their way through Hunter in the future. Toodles!
