From the 25th of August to 24th of May, fall semester and spring semester of year 1 of Hunter came to an end (finally). Honestly? College > High School. Not sure about you but something about making your own schedule aligned with your friends, having some idea of how the professor is prior to enrolling and some other benefits made the experience bearable. Its funny how I was literally going through it during the semester but now that it’s done, I feel reflective and I’m focusing on the positives rather than the negatives LOL. I also feel like the whole idea about “your second semester is easier than your first” also proved to be false, at least for me. However, what about you guys? (Yeah, I learned how to do instagram polls on here😎)

fingers crossed you can see the results afterwards 🤞

While that’s all good, I also wanted to show the classes I took for my first year of college just in case anyone in the future is looking back or anyone needs class recommendations. It’s like a miniature rate my professor — but only for the classes I took. For the sake of not boring you too much, let me just review fall 2021 on this post and spring 2022 will be on the next post alright? Yeah, that sounds good to me 🙂

Fall 2021

CLA 11000 – Greek & Latin Roots of EnglishGeorgios Spiliotopoulos3
Honestly one of the lighter classes I took that semester. It was online and satisfies Flexible Core – World Cultures & Global Issues. It was such an easy class and the teacher was one of the nicest I’ve ever met. There is a book associated with the class and it helps if you have a whatsapp or discord group with your classmates so you can learn together throughout the semester. We had a midterm, a final and a couple homeworks. 10/10 would recommend !!

CSCI 12700 – Introduction: Computer ScienceTiziana Ligorio3
For an introductory computer science course, it was okay. It satisfies Flexible Core – Scientific World and also is a must-take class if you are a CS major. I would love to go back to that class rather the CS class I’m taking next semester but that’s besides the point. For us, our lectures were online with weekly code reviews and quizzes in person. We had a midterm and a final as well. When I was in the class, code reviews and quizzes seemed very annoying but honestly, it was really beneficial. It made us go back to our assignments and learn more from them. As far as the assignments, there were around 100 assignments all on gradescope in python and towards the end, MIPS and C++. Not the best of times were had in the class, but the TA emails were helpful and figuring out the assignment on your own was definitely a feeling you want to experience time and time again.

ENGL 22000 – Intro: Writing about LiteratureSusan Barile3
Its an english class! Honestly, everyone had mixed feelings but personally, I loved it. It satisfies Required Core – English Composition and is also writing intensive! So you can knock out two requirements with one class. The class was not too intense but also not too easy. It consisted of diagnostics, a multitude of essays, annotations, discussions, a précis, a presentation and a research paper for the final assignment. It sounds a lot but the discussions carried the class. She really facilitated them and they were often about real world issues and everytime after class ended, looking back at what we discussed never failed to amaze me. Bartleby was a definite standout for me but there were more books we covered such as the tempest, homegoing and also a lot of scholarly articles and arguments based on them. I don’t regret taking this class, fun times were had although, she can definitely be a harsh grader at times.

MATH 15000 – Calculus IShahera Jannah4
I love her. I don’t love calc 1 but I definitely love her. Honestly one of the nicest, caring professors I’ve had. The class satisfies Required Core – Mathematical & Quantitative Reasoning. I wouldn’t say the class was easy because it wasn’t but, the way she structures her exams made it easy for me to think I always had a shot at doing good on them. Her extra credits were a life saver and you can earn more points if you attend the dolciani math workshop. Coursework included lumen homework assignments and around 4 or so exams. If you can’t attend the in person class, she emails you the zoom recording. If you are stuck on a lumen question she emails you and helps you find a solution. If you ask questions in class she may not have the answer to right away, she remembers to email you afterwards. And her emails? Sweetest things I’ve ever read. She even has a feedback page after her exams since she’s always trying to improve and better herself as a professor. I have nothing but praises for this class and would take it again in a heartbeat.

So you might be wondering why are there two instructors. It’s because there’s two sections to this class, a lecture and a discussion. Professor Stanley lead the lectures while Liz lead the discussions. The class satisfies Flexible Core – Individual and Society. We learned a lot from the book professor Stanley published himself and had weekly readings. The main learning portion of the course comes from the discussion sections I feel, since the lecture is huge. Our class was online for both and I got to learn about a lot of different perspectives while in the class. We also had weekly quizzes and a final. I can’t speak on behalf of the other discussion teachers but Liz kept the discussions light, semi-formal and nice. They revolved on us answering questions regarding the chapter we were on and then it would open up to an open discussion where we simply talked about what we learned and had questions about. It was a fun class at times and did not stress me much as the answers to the quizzes were all from the book. I’d definitely take it again!

And that’s it! 5 courses, 16 credits, august 25th to december 20th, fall semester 2021 ends. Keep in mind though, for freshmen first semesters, we were not allowed to pick our courses. However, I definitely lucked out. I definitely worked hard but I’m very glad my teachers were the way they were. I wish I could say the same about spring semester but that’s for the next post (foreshadowing!!!). Also, you might be wondering why am I not rating them like how RMP does. It’s cause I literally don’t know what numerical grade I’d assign to who. So yeah that’s a drawback. But yeah, alongside scouring through the facebook group, course catalog, degreeworks, whatsapp and discord groups, asking seniors and upperclassmen about what classes to take next semester hopefully this will also help you find out what courses to take or not take!

  1. You’re the coolest person I know 🙂

  2. what a year my brother

  3. I needed class recs so thank you for not gatekeeping! Classes that hit multiple requirements at once >>>
